The Basel Institute on Governance, RISE Project, and the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project are pleased to invite you to a training workshop on Financial Investigations and Asset Recovery – “Follow the money”.

The workshop is organised jointly by experts from the Basel Institute’s International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) and the Journalism Development Network (JDN) in the context of a three-year initiative on "Mapping and Visualising Cross-Border Crime” funded by the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Program. The joint training workshop will be held in Basel, Switzerland, on 5-6 April 2017 and conducted in English.

The key objective of the two-day workshop is to enhance the capacity of participants from public sector law enforcement and investigative non-state actors to conduct financial investigations and apply asset tracing techniques in relation to corruption and money laundering cases. Participants will learn about the concept of money laundering and the use of offshore structures to conceal the beneficial ownership of illicit assets as well as investigative techniques in relation to corruption investigations. Emphasis will be placed on intelligence gathering and financial investigations to trace assets by using open source information and technology tools. While the experts from the ICAR focus on investigation techniques and the legal framework from a law enforcement perspective, the experts from RISE and OCCRP will provide case examples in exposing financial crime through the use of open sources in their capacity as investigative journalists.

Participation is limited to 15 participants within Switzerland. The final selection of participants will be determined by the project organisers to ensure an audience from a mixed background including law enforcement, civil society, investigative journalists and financial institutions.

Costs: The attendance of the two-day workshop is free of charge. Travel costs (second class train fare within Switzerland) and two night’s accommodation for participants coming from outside of Basel will be covered by the organisers.

Please enlist your interest to participate by sending your name, institutional affiliation and function as well as a short CV by email until 15 March 2017 to Selvan.lehmann@baselgovernance.org.
