EMB-Ethics Management

Mission

Promote value-based compliance management in the construction industry in Germany

Goals

The EMB-Ethics Management (EMB) initiative is dedicated to promoting value-based conmpliance management within the construction industry.

EMB aims to foster a culture of ethical behavior and compliance in the construction sector, enhancing trust and integrity among all stakeholders involved in construction projects.

Stakeholders

The initiative started in 1996 through the Bavarian Construction Industry Association, during a period when the German construction industry faced a series of corruption scandals. In 2007, in light of the positive impact, the initiative gained nation-wide recognition, when the Association of the German Construction Industry recommended membership to its stakeholders. As of 2022, the initiative counted 215 members across Germany.

Activities

According to the initiative's statutes, EMB members must meet four standards:

  1. Codification: Document core values in a declaration, mission statement, code of ethics, or similar, outlining the company’s business principles.

  2. Implementation: Translate these values into binding standards of conduct, covering compliance, integrity, anti-competitive behaviour, client dealings, and gifts, supported by employee training.

  3. Monitoring: Conduct regular external audits to verify implementation, with successful audits earning a time-limited certificate.

  4. Organisation: Leadership exemplifies and is accountable for implementing the ethics management system (‘tone from the top’).
