Code of Ethics for Business in Kenya

The Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) launched the Code of Ethics for Businesses in Kenya, a principles-based initiative rooted in the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, with the mission to create a level playing field where ethical business practices serve as both a strategic advantage and a fundamental duty.

The Code was developed collaboratively with industry experts to guide companies in making lawful, ethical, and respectful decisions, ensuring fair outcomes for customers, colleagues, partners, and stakeholders. Companies commit publicly through reports and compliance letters, reinforcing transparency.

Over the past 12 years, the Code has transformed corporate conduct. With 841 signatories, from major industry leaders like Safaricom and Kenya Commercial Bank to dynamic SMEs, the Code ensures that ethical decision-making, transparency, and accountability are integral to everyday operations.

Industry associations such as the Kenya Association of Manufacturers and the Kenya Private Sector Alliance have actively supported the Code’s creation and widespread adoption. Regulatory and anti-corruption bodies, including Transparency International, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Department of Justice, work with the initiative to strengthen enforcement and compliance measures.

High-level dialogues and policy engagements with business leaders, policymakers, and regulatory bodies have positioned the Code as a complementary tool to national frameworks. Collaborative efforts have contributed to the enactment of Kenya’s Anti-Bribery Act and supported progress on the forthcoming Whistleblower Protection Act.

The initiative provides anti-corruption trainings to its members that have equipped participants with the skills needed to implement robust corporate governance, fostering a sustainable culture of ethical business practices.

In 2024, the initiative launched a new online transparency platform that streamlines reporting processes, enhances efficiency, and enables real-time monitoring of anti-corruption efforts.
