Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI)

Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI)

Mission

Increase transparency and participation for a more sustainable management of marine fisheries

Goals

The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) is a global partnership that seeks to increase transparency and participation for a more sustainable management of marine fisheries. By making fisheries management more transparent and inclusive, FiTI promotes informed public debates on fisheries policies and supports the long-term contribution of the sector to national economies and the well-being of citizens and businesses that depend on a healthy marine environment.

The principal aim is to get countries to sign up to the FiTI standard.

Stakeholders

The FiTI Standard is the outcome of extensive discussions, spanning nearly two years, by members of the FiTI International Advisory Group, including representatives from governments, large-scale and small-scale fishing sector organisations, multinational and regional fisheries organisations and civil society groups working on fisheries and marine conservation.

Activities

The FiTI Principles are the cornerstones of the initiative. They reflect the beliefs and aims of all FiTI stakeholders. They were agreed on at the 1st International Conference of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative on 3 February 2016 in Nouakchott/Mauritania.

In order to be formally recognised as an FiTI implementing country, a country must implement six sign-up steps and submit a candidate application to the FiTI International Board. If the application is approved, the country is considered a FiTI Candidate country.

After its first reports and undergoing successfully its first validation, a country is declared a FiTI Compliant country. This status is maintained if the country continues to adhere to the FiTI Standard throughout subsequent validations.
