Mission

Strengthen governance and busines ethics in India

Goals

The Centre of Excellence for Governance, Ethics and Transparency (CEGET) was founded in 2015 to promote governance and ethics in business, particularly in the context of urban development.

The Centre’s main objectives were to:

  • Establish a robust framework of governance and transparency within the Smart City Mission of the Government of India.

  • Align with the Key Commitments of The New Urban Agenda, including access to equal opportunities, resilience to disasters, connectivity, climate change action, cleaner cities, provision of basic services, safe and green public spaces, and respect for the rights of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons.

  • Develop intervention strategies linking Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) for effective urban development in India.

Stakeholders

CEGET was established by the Global Compact Network India with funding from the Siemens Integrity Initiative.

Activities

CEGET’s activities can be summarized under:

  1. Corporate Governance: Ensuring an ethical approach and transparency in stakeholder governance, especially in corporates; developing the business case for good governance and anti-corruption; promoting transparency in procurement procedures, value chain transparency, sustainability, and adherence to national and international compliance policies and norms.

  2. Urban Governance: Integrating transparency and accountability in public establishments, especially urban governance institutions; spurring the adaptation of the framework for smart city governance; advocating for the need for risk assessment and PPP (Public-Private Partnership) for smart cities.

  3. Environmental Governance: Promoting conservation, preservation, and rehabilitation of the environment along with urban pollution control; raising awareness about biodiversity conservation and climate change and the need for proactive alliances; fine-tuning collective action in biodiversity through business stewardship.
