Urban Cleaning, Solid Waste and Effluents Anti-Corruption Collective Action

Mission

Ensuring a culture of integrity as the cornerstone of sustainable business

Goals

Addressing corruption in the urban cleaning, solid waste and effluents sector is an important factor in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.Combating corruption in the urban cleaning sector is also related to SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption.

Facilitated by the Global Compact Network Brazil and Instituto Ethos, companies and organisations joined forces in a Collective Action initiative for the urban cleaning, solid waste and effluents sector with the aim of fostering a culture of ethics and integrity wiithin participating companies and demonstrating leadership for more transparent and fair conditions in public procurement processes and througout the sector's value chain.

Activities

The initiative has three working areas:

  • Engagement with the private sector, especially SMEs, to raise companies' awareness about the importance of ethical behaviour and raise government awareness about the mandatory necessity of compliance programmes;
  • Development of integrity tools, including developing a learning yool and integrity commitment;
  • Advocacy for the requirement of compliance programmes to participate in bids.

In December 2019, the initiative released anti-corruption principles for the sector ("Pacto Setorial de Integridade em Limpeza Urbana e Resíduos Sólidos"), developed together with a practical manual. It was signed by the CEOs of the companies and business associations of the sector.
