Collective Action Initiative on Integrity and Anti-Corruption in the Private Sector in Mexico

Mission

Promote anti-corruption, integrity and compliance among businesses in Mexico

Goals

The Collective Action Initiative on Integrity and Anti-Corruption in the Private Sector in Mexico was established in 2023 with the following goals:

  • Identify and promote Mexico’s private sector priority actions regarding anti-corruption, integrity, and compliance by establishing collaborative spaces and transferring experience and knowledge to the business community, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs);
  • Increase awareness of the advantages of competitive and long-term sustainability provided by integrity, as well as promote best practices and accompany SMEs in strengthening their culture of legality as part of their value chain.

Stakeholders

The initiative is led by the Global Compact Network Mexico with financial support from the Siemens Integrity Initiaitive. The initiative also partnered with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Mexico.

Activities

Through a CEO pledge, companies publicly commit to fighting corruption and enable different stakeholders to hold them accountable. The pledge includes commitments to participate in Global Compact and UNODC anti-corruption activities, periodically use the self-assessment tool, and take part in training activities.

A digitised self-assessment tool was developed to allow companies to evaluate their current practices, identify gaps in implementation, and compare their results with average scores by geography, size, and sector. The tool also enables companies to track their progress annually. It features an aggregated dashboard of KPIs that can inform decision-making on national anti-corruption public policy and private sector strategies. This data is used to create policy recommendation reports and develop capacity-building programmes through the Public & Private Sector Peer Learning Group.

The Public & Private Sector Peer Learning Group helps participants better understand their specific needs and identify legislative gaps and barriers to implementing integrity and anti-corruption programmes. It leverages data from the self-assessment tool to guide the development of targeted capacity-building programmes, such as private sector compliance officers supporting local governments in corruption risk management and in developing and implementing mitigation measures.

Members of the Peer Learning Group communicate recommendations to the public sector, significantly improving public-private relationships in Mexico. This collaboration enhances cooperation with government bodies in the fight against corruption and influences policy changes aimed at combating corruption effectively.
