Custom Brokers Professional Ethics Standards

The Turkish Customs Broker Initiative brings together customs authorities, customs brokers and civil society under the leadership of the Ethics and Reputation Society of Turkey (TEID) with the aim to raise anti-corruption standards and ethical awareness amongst customs brokers as to the crucial role they play in ensuring security and fair competition.

As part of the initiative, TEID convened customs brokers representing two thirds of all customs clearances in five Turkish cities to sign an anti-corruption declaration. Joint activities agreed in the declaration include training of the parties’ employees, training of value chain collaborators’ employees, joint progress evaluations and assessments, and communication.

Brokers that implement their commitments under the declaration receive via a compliance programme addressing bribery risks, receive an “Ethical Broker Logo” that identifies them as a broker capable of managing identified risks.

This sectoral Collective Action on customs brokers is featured in the 2015 UN Global Compact Practical Guide for Collective Action against Corruption as a best practice.
