Collective Action for Integrity in the Energy Sector

Promote a culture of integrity and compliance in Brazil’s energy sector for the sustainable growth of all businesses

The Brazilian energy sector, encompassing all its segments - generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialisation - plays a fundamental role in the quality of life of citizens, significantly impacting the economy and the development of the country. Promoting a culture of integrity and compliance with applicable legislation in this environment is crucial for the sustainable growth of all businesses.

The initiative’s main objectives are to:

1. Mobilize all actors within the sector for the creation and consolidation of an ethical and healthy environment, free from corruption and/or bribery in any form, thereby strengthening a culture of integrity and the sector’s reputation both nationally and internationally;
2. Encourage fair competition, generating new business opportunities on sustainable foundations, in compliance with antitrust legislation;
3. Promote the fundamental principles and values of ethical and transparent conduct within the sector and in its public-private relations, raising awareness among industry players of the need to take a proactive role in integrity actions;
4. Identify the main risks of corrupt practices within the sector, and to promote mitigation measures, including the adoption of best ESG practices, encouraging businesses to adopt and share these practices;
5. Work towards improving conditions for fostering ethics and a culture of integrity in the energy sector’s value chain, and in its relations with public authorities and private entities.

The initiative is acilitated by the Global Compact Network Brazil and received seed funding under the Siemens Integrity Initiative.

Eleven large companies and 4 SMEs from the energy sector are actively participating in the initiative.

The initiaitve has been undertaking various activities to affect change in the sector, including:

• Drafting and signing of governance rules and the agreement for joining the initiative by participating companies;
• Conducting a corruption risk assessment for the energy sector;
• Developing a stakeholder mapping for the initiative;
• Developing a guide on ESG best practices and relationships with public administration;
• Developing an operational benchmarking manual for the sector.
