Metals Technology Initiative (MTI)

Mission

Prevent bribery and all forms of corruption

Goals

The Metals Technology Initiative (MTI) is a Collective Action initiative that provides a forum for the exchange of anti-corruption compliance best practices and related developments in the metals technology industry among its members to collaborate further in the development of joint anti-corruption initiatives in countries in which they operate.

MTI member companies recognise that corruption is detrimental to the business environment and has negative social and economic impacts in the communities and countries where it occurs. This initiative reflects their shared commitment to prevent bribery and all forms of corruption, as set out in their respective Codes of Conduct and related internal policies and controls.

Stakeholders

MTI brings together the four leading companies in the metals technology industry: Danieli, Primetals Technologies, SMS Group and Tenova. Membership is open to other companies only at the discretion and unanimous agreement of the initiator companies.

The initiative is facilitated by the Basel Institute on Governance, which leads and organises meetings of the top compliance management of the four member companies, providing agendas, minutes, substantive contributions and benchmarking of elements of the companies' compliance programmes.

Activities

MTI companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) setting out the companies’ anti-corruption and fair competition commitments and proposed actions to promote their anti-corruption principles. This MoU is complementary to, and reflective of, key elements of their respective anti-corruption compliance programmes. The companies are committed to continue working together to ensure that their compliance programmes reflect best practices and fully reflect the undertakings set out in the MoU.

Representatives from the senior managements of MTI companies have been meeting regularly since mid-2013 to address anti-corruption compliance within their business sector resulting in guidance documents on whistleblowing and reporting, gifts and hospitality, and third party due diligence.
